Šiauliai is referred to by various names in different languages: Samogitian Šiaulē, Latvian Saule (historic) and Šauļi (modern), Polish Szawle, German (outdated) Schaulen, pronounced [ˈʃaʊ̯lən] ⓘ, Russian Шавли (Shavli – historic) and Шяуля́й (Shyaulyai – modern), Yiddish שאַװל (Shavel).[4][5]
