Meerut (pronunciationⓘ, ISO: Mēraṭha) is a city in the western region of the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. Located in the Meerut district, the city is 80 km (50 mi) northeast of the national capital New Delhi, and is 480 km (300 mi) west of the state capital, Lucknow.[8] Meerut is the second-most populous city in the National Capital Region (NCR), a region centered on Delhi.[9] As of 2011[update], Meerut is the 33rd most populous urban agglomeration and the 26th most populous city in India.[10][11] Meerut rose to prominence in 1803 during the British colonial era, where it was the site of one of colonial India's largest cantonments.[12] The city is famous for being the starting point of the 1857 rebellion against Company rule in India. Known as the "Sports City of India", Meerut is one of the largest producers of sports goods in the country. The city is also known as largest producer of musical instruments in the country, as well one of Asia's biggest gold markets. The city is also an education hub in western Uttar Pradesh. It has the 3rd-highest per capita income in the state after Ghaziabad[a]and Gautam Budh Nagar (Noida and Greater Noida).[13]
